University of Technology and Management (UTM) holds its first annual convocation at the SosoTham auditorium on 22nd July, 2016. There were around 90 students present at the venue to be awarded degrees in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses of four different streams. The occasion witnessed the presence of the State Governor of Meghalaya, V. Shamuganathan as Chief Guest and Minister in-charge Urban Affairs, Dr. AmpareenLyngdoh as a Guest of Honour. • In his communication address, the State Governor of Meghalaya called upon the future professionals to serve the nation. Our country is still reeling-in the problems of dowry, corruption, unemployment as well as rising infant and maternal infant mortality rates. The need is on our part to resolve these issues for the progress of our country. Therefore, the Governor urged all students to live with a purpose as he felt that gaining employment should not be the only motive of a true human. An Emotionally Charged Occasion • We need to look beyond our material life to give back to the society and offer help. Talking about the convocation day, the Governor called it a momentous occasion when the heart and mind of a graduate fills with joy and thrill. On the emotionally charged occasion, he urged all aspirants to remember the sacrifices of our parents, teachers and loved ones.
Advocating the fact that intellectual soundness and physical well being are keys to successful living, he advised all passing graduates to stay mentally sound and physically fit. He told them not to be cynical or vague, remove all impossibility out and create a positive attitude in themselves. Mentioning that employment cannot only be the true measurement of success, the Governor asked the graduating students to master themselves and not to waste the acquired knowledge. Just focus, persevere, stay honest and truthful. Do not get distracted with unworthy things as mind wanders from one place to the other. CSR Initiatives of the Institution • On the other hand, Dr. Lyngdoh appreciated the University for its initiatives in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). She took to the moment and appealed to the entire UTM fraternity to take part in the governmental efforts. The government is making efforts to tackle with two important issues affecting Shillong city particularly and the Meghalaya state on the whole. The problems like safe drinking water and urban waste management are required to be dealt with.
She stated that even the government looks forward to such an opportunity to coordinate with the educational institution on these two main problems. • Others who gave a speech at the event were the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor as well as the Pro-Vice Chancellor reiterated the same. • It can be reminded that this university provides technical and professional programmes in disciplines of mass communication and journalism, digital marketing, travel and tourism, technology and hospitality.
