First 90 Days Statistics tell us that 65% of Injuries beyond just first aid happen to new employees with less than 90 days of employment with Zachry, or Longer term Zachry employees that have been at their new work location less than 90 days.
What Can We Do? • As A Supervisor You Can: • Take Responsibility to Ensure Our New Employees are Engaged in Our Safety Process • Review of Safety Handbook • Employee Expectation Program • Five Week Safety Orientation • Safety Task Analysis • Expanded Safety Training like Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, and Trenching and Shoring • Always Be The Right Example of The Behavior We Expect From All Zachry Employees
Safety Orientation • New Employees Will See The Safety Orientation Video When They Hire-in For The Project. • It Establishes Safety as A Core Value • It Will Tell Them About The Top Five Injuries at Zachry and In Our Industry • Eye Injuries • Hand Injuries • Slips Trips and Fall At Same Elevation • Exposure to Hazardous Energy and Chemicals • Falls From Elevations • Go Over These Subjects Often In Your Crew Meetings After The Safety Orientation the New Employee Receives A First 90 Day Sticker to be Dated and Placed on Their Hard Hat Picture of 90 Day Sticker
Five Week Orientation • A Structured Way to Extend The Initial Learning Experience For New Employees. It Includes: • The Five Week Orientation Qualification Booklet • The New Employee Receives This at The Time They Hire In. This Qualification Booklet is Given to Their Immediate Supervisor By The Employee When the New Employee Reports to His/Her Crew. The Booklet is Maintained by The Employee During The Five Week Period and Reviewed With Their Supervisor For Sign Off of Completed Items Weekly. When The Five Weeks is Complete the Signature Page is Turned in For Cyborg Entry and The Booklet Returned to the Employee.
Five Week Orientation • A Five Week Complete Sticker • Is Given to The New Employee After They Have Successfully Completed Their 5 Week Orientation and The Qualification Book Has Been Signed Off By Employee and Supervisor. • The Sticker is Placed Under the 90 Day Sticker as A Chevron. Supervisor has the opportunity to use this time to recognize and congratulate the new employee on the completion of the 5 week orientation. Consider doing this at the monthly mass safety meeting.
Extended Training Beyond Awareness Level • There are many required training subjects for our new employees BEFORE they are exposed to the hazards. • Cooperate to the fullest with your management team and Safety SME trainers to ensure our new employees get the training they need before the exposure happens: • Hazard Communication – exposures to chemicals • PPE – Eyes, ears, arms, feet…the list is long. • Fall Protection – Been to FP Lab? • Structural Steel – Leading Edge Work? • Confined Space – Supervisor, Attendant, Entrant..? • Lock-Out/Tag-Out – De-Energize • Scaffolding – User? Scaffold Builder? • Ladders – Do they know the safe way to use a ladder? • And many others.
First 90 Days • Really gives you the supervisor the opportunity to engage with a new employee one-on-one as they work through the 5 Week Orientation Program • Use the 5 Week Orientation Training Book that has been given to you as a guide and resource • Always look for ways to improve the process; talk to your Project Safety Manager about the resources he can provide to assist you.
