  3. What is Papal Supremacy • Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 A.D. • Church was unifying force during the chaotic time of Western Europe • Popes lived in Rome • Popes began to believe that they had more power than the king

  4. What was the impact of excommunication? • Could not receive the sacraments or a Christian burial • A noble could face an interdict if he opposed the Church • Church demanded fighting stop between Friday through Sunday, which helped feudal warfare decrease

  5. What was the importance of the Church? • Priest was the only contact people had with the Church • Rituals and faith were a part of everyday life • Was the social center where visiting and dancing took place • Daily life revolved around Christian calendar
