What is e-learning? e-learning is now broadly recognised as a cost effective option for knowledge acquisition across large disparate communities. Michael Allen, in his work ‘Creating Successful e-learning’ (Pfeiffer 2006) defines e-learning… “The term e-learning applies to the broad range of ways computing and communication technologies can be used for teaching and learning.” “e-learning is delivery of carefully constructed instructional events through computing technologies.”
Why use e-learning? • Individual Benefits • Self paced learning • Ability to assess self & manage progress • Organisational Benefits • Consistent knowledge training across all levels • Quick delivery • Ability to track usage and • knowledge retention
e-learning: How & When? • Best used when… • High volume of learners • Geographically dispersed • Content is relatively stable over time • Need standard approach
Frost & Sullivan: Developing e-learning • The GIL University offers: • E-learning as a business solution – fully customisable and relevant to the requirements of a business organisation • Rapid e-learning that allows us to give our clients what they need; when they need it • SCORM compliant e-learning – this means our e-learning modules follow a set of technical standards for e-learning products ensuring that they are usable across systems • E-learning modules that are designed to be interactive and engaging - this often spells the difference between 100 page documents and thirty minute interactive modules • Instructional design and project management expertise
e-learning examples In this project, we supported the rapid provision of skills development as a company grew its global operations following an acquisition. This is a sample of an interaction containing images and text. Clicking on the icon in the live module at the bottom of each image displays a specific description.
e-learning examples This is a sample of an interaction containing images and text. Clicking on each page on the book turns the page, displaying more text. This is a suitable interaction to present content in chunks.
e-learning Samples This is a sample of an interaction that is used for testing purposes. The user is required to drag and drop the appropriate response into the corresponding category. See Case Study for more detail of this project and the value of testing built into a module.
e-learning Samples This project was designed to ensure that participants were up to date with best practice approach that the company wished to implement. This is a sample of a screen with a link (text in blue). Links are useful when you have descriptive content that you would like the learner to view, save or print for later reference.
