  1. SURFnet6 Update CEF Networks Workshop 2007 Erik-Jan Bos, SURFnet, The Netherlands

  2. Summary • SURFnet • SURFnet6 status • User controlled lightpaths (DRAC) • Dynamic wavelengths (DAS-3/StarPlane) • Further plans

  3. SURFnet • Dutch National Research & Education Network (NREN) • Not for profit organization, 60 employees • 100% ownership by users via Stichting SURF • 180 connected institutions, 750.000 end-users • Business-model: • Innovation by project subsidies (14 M€/year) • Operations by tariffs from institutions (18 M€/year)

  4. SURFnet • Three development projects: • GigaPort Next Generation Network: • Networks for Research (SURFnet6) • Research on Networks • SURFworks: • Middleware and application development • SURFnet/Kennisnet Innovation Program • Application and User Support programs

  5. SURFnet Network Capacity Evolution

  6. SURFnet6 overview • Nation-wide hybrid optical and packet switching infrastructure • Based on 7000+ km of SURFnet-owned managed dark fiber, all the way to the customers premises • SURFnet6 delivers IPv4 and IPv6 services plus lightpath provisioning over a single transmission infrastructure • Truly collapsed IP backbone (routers at 2 locations only) • Powerful and flexible photonic network

  7. Services on SURFnet6 SURFnet6 IP routed services Lightpath services IPv4 IPv6 dynamic static single lightpath unicast multicast unicast multicast OPN SURFnet5

  17. Group manager • Add users to group • Manage selected user rights • Get the accounting of service usage • Request ports! Service manager • Add resources to DRAC control • Create resource groups with policy • Create top level user groups • Hand RG to UG Network operators • Know about the service • Manage network incidents • Don’t provision on DRAC resource! Creating a manageable serviceFinding the right place for management functions Service users • Get registered with group(s) • Log on • Schedule services within group • Use service • Verify service USER COMMUNITY SURFNET

  19. DRAC DAS-3 / StarPlane:Dynamic Wavelengths • Full wavelengths in the network controlled by users / applications • Allow massive bandwidth changes between two sites • Network service: similar control as ‘standard’ dynamic lightpaths

  20. Further plans • Further introduce eDCO and eROADM • Increase fiber resilience in last mile • Multi-domain control plane interworking (DRAC) • Test new technology, e.g. PBB-TE • Further enhance monitoring and reporting • Continue on tools development, e.g. TL1 Toolkit and NDL developments
