Genes dictate life, don’t they? • There is a central dogma of biology that genes govern our fate: • Inherited characteristics • Diseases susceptibility • Intelligence • Behaviour • Emotional make up • Weight • ‘Brains’ of the cell Much modern bio-chemical research is into how to manipulate genes to eliminate undesirable characteristics and enhance desirable ones

DNA DNA is the equivalent to the instructions on how to make a brick that will go to make up a house. The instructions on how to assemble the bricks into a house exist elsewhere. Instructions Form clay into a brick shape and heat to 1200 degrees for a few hours ? ?
DNA and Genes • What is DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid)? • DNA exists in the nucleus of the cell. • It is a strand of molecules forming a double helix. • The interconnecting links between the two strands form a coded sequence of ‘letters’. • An unravelled length of DNA in a single cell is about 2 meters. • (total in body – one billion kilometres) • 10 times dia of solar system • What is a gene? • A gene is a segment of DNA. • The human has 25,000 genes. • One gene contains all the ‘letters’ to ‘spell’ the word to form one protein. 1 Gene
Proteins What is a protein? • Building blocks of cells and living organisms. • They are formed from highly folded chains of molecules known as amino acids. • There are 20 types of amino acids which we obtain from food. • Hormones are also proteins produced by cells. Cells have many functions but a big part of their activity is that of a protein production factory.

Problems with Genetics • Some issues with current gene theory: • There are not enough genes to explain the existence of all the types of proteins required to form a human. (25,000 genes 120,000 proteins) • If the nucleus of a cell is its brains then why does a cell not die but carry on functioning (in the main normally) for up to 2 months after the nucleus is removed? • The folding of one protein takes the most powerful computer on earth a year to calculate. It takes the cell about a second. What controls the protein folding process?
Problems with Genetics These two mice are genetically identical Dr. Dean Ornish, Head of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute – Study concluded that life style changes influences gene activity. (New Scientist - 21st June 2008) A chimp’s genes are almost identical to ours
Adding Colour to Life • Epigenetics means the control above genes. • Conventional science only sees the black and white picture, Epigenetics adds colour, like a new dimension to genetics.
Summary • Genes provide the potential for producing proteins (building blocks) . • There are many limiting factors to current genetic theory . • DNA does not control us, it is a servant. • Epigenetics shows that nutrients, lifestyle, stress, emotions, beliefs and other factors dictate genetic activity. • Disease of purely genetic nature is rare. Even genetic predisposition to a disease can be altered by lifestyle changes.
How Powerful are our Beliefs? Which do you believe is healthier? Is this desirable? What do you believe is your ideal body size? Why are you attending this workshop – what beliefs brought you hear? • Beliefs form our reality and govern our actions, thoughts, perceptions and even our physiology (body functions). • Beliefs dictate our attitude to things. • Beliefs and motivations are intimately linked.

Placebo (I will please) • Beliefs can change our body functions and self-healing mechanisms. • Thoughts and emotions influence cellular activity. • Typically 30% people improve on Placebo (depression 50%). Classic Placebo effects are demonstrated by giving sugar pills to people who belie they have properties to improve health, lose weight and so on. It is interesting to note that: • The bigger the pill the more effective it is. • Two pills are more effective than one. • Coloured pills are more effective than white ones. • Injections more powerful than pills. • Often side-effects are reduced over real drugs. • Also doctor-patient relationship, expectation & motivation play a factor
Self Suggestion It is possible to affect your physiology by making suggestions through the imagination. Build muscles just by imagining working out at the gym Marilyn Schlitz healed her badly-damaged leg from a motorbike accident through imagining its healing
Ariel Essex Sometimes positive thinking and the imagination is not enough – something deeper is required. • Subconscious far more powerful than conscious • Affirmation - I am lovable – but child pattern – ‘you are worthless’ overrides Insert Video – Arielle Story
Acceptance & Responsibility How do you react?
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) • Natural language information Psychology & counselling involves resolving past issues so a person is able to move forward in their life – largely involves looking back. NLP is a practical approach to accepting where we are and taking responsibility for moving forward to a goal. Psychology NLP PAST FUTURE NOW +ve -ve
Diversions A B DIVERT A B • Belief about what is allowed and what not allowed. • NLP helps to undo unproductive and limiting, beliefs, behaviours and perceptions • What? • Why? • How?
