LIVING DIALOGUE WORKSHOP (Add name of your group & date)
PURPOSE The Living Dialogues are part of a process to • Inspire people to think constructively about health • Act on behalf of their own health • Influence the type of care they receive
In a Living Dialogue, each person takes a turn • Telling & hearing stories about positive experiences of health and caring • Sharing positive examples of taking charge of one’s own health & care • Identifying the conditions and assets that make these stories possible
From the stories, we will • Identify • Major themes • Conditions that influenced the situation • The assets that enabled you to move forward • Develop provocative propositions • That encourage us to go beyond the status quo • That begin to build the dream for the future • Identify action steps for us and our community
Appreciative Inquiry • A strategy for purposeful change • Concentrates on the best of “what is” • Seeks possibilities of “what could be” • Cooperative search for strengthens within the current system
Appreciative Inquiry—4 Phases • Discovery—the best of what is • Dream—what might be • Design—what should be • Destiny—how to empower, learn & adjust
The Valeo Initiative • Definition • From the Latin: to have the power to achieve vigor, health and wellness • Vision • To create an epidemic of health
The Valeo Initiative • Mission • To Inspire and support people- centered health and care • Where people actively pursue and take responsibility for health • Where care is centered around the individual and their families • Where public policies support healthy people and communities.
Why are we doing the Living Dialogue? • The Valeo Initiative hopes to inspire thousands of people around the country to participate in Living Dialogue workshops • All ages • All regions of the country • All economic groups • Patients and healthcare providers
Why are we doing the Living Dialogue cont’d • Valeo will collect stories from these Dialogues to create a “public voice” that can play a significant role in affecting decisions about health and care • Participants will receive a Report detailing what we have learned and what was learned by all the groups participating in the Living Dialogue Dialogue • We can use this information to create an Agenda for Action for ourselves
Why are we doing the Living Dialogue cont’d • Our information will also be used • To encourage people to continue talking & thinking about ways they can get healthier and receive better care • To ensure that people have the type of information their need to make good decisions about health and care • To identify ways that doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, etc. can support us in achieving our goals for good health and care
Guidelines for Interviews • Begin with one person interviewing the other on Question 1 • Switch roles • Start with stories • Appreciative Inquiry (AI) seeks the whole of the idea, not analysis of a situation • Let the individual tell his/her story • Don’t offer your opinion
Guidelines cont’d • Encourage generalizations about life-giving forces • Think of the story as a plant—what nourishes it, ie: water, sunlight, etc • Questions to dig deeper • Tell me more? • Why do you feel that way? • Why do you think that worked?
Guidelines cont’d • Be generally curious abut experiences, thoughts, and feelings • Allow for silence • Some people take longer than others to answer • Don’t force anyone to answer a question
Guidelines cont’d • Use Interviewer Forms • Jot down high points of story for each question • Jot down interesting quotes • Include Conditions and Assets in the appropriate section • Ask partner if they want stories included in Valeo materials • If yes, have them sign your form
