1. Welcome to ChemistryDr. Elizabeth Roland August 16, 2012 Please obtain an index card to answer the following questions: What is your name? What do you like to be called? What previous science courses have you taken? How do you define chemistry? What is one thing you did this summer?

4. Each of you will state your name and one thing you did this summer. I will be taking notes……

5. What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of structure of matter and the transformations it may undergo. Chemistry is a laboratory based science which is broadly classified as a physical science. Most science majors and science related majors in college require students to take chemistry course sequences. Taking a high school chemistry course is very helpful for anyone going to college.

6. Food and Drink Because this room is a working laboratory, no food should be brought into the room. While the room may look clean, small chemical residues are everywhere (so small that you cannot see it). This small amount could make you sick. We are all safer not eating in the room. Drinks which are covered, may be in the lecture portion of the room as long as they are covered. No drinks may EVER be in the laboratory section of the room.

7. How to Earn the Grade You Want.. • Stay awake in class • Ask questions and listen for the answers • Do your homework • Think while you work, do not work to just finish • Review your class notes daily • Do not TRUST “googled” answers (always note the source and consider if it is reliable) • Use your book as a reference tool (yes, it can answer some of your questions) • Figure out how best you learn (not memorize)

8. Materials You will need: Composition notebook Scientific calculator 3 ring binder Pens Pencils Loose leaf paper 1 package of 100 index cards 1 highlighter

9. Scientific Calculator? There are generally two types of calculator classifications: Scientific Business For chemistry, you need a scientific calculator. Look for a button with EE on it. That will allow you to enter larger numbers such as 6.022*1023. You might also look for the carrot key (^)

10. Laboratory Notebooks • We will use composition notebooks to collect laboratory data. You need to write you name clearly on the front and write legibly. • If you make an error, do not erase, or scribble it out. Just make a line through it. You may have been right the first time. • Typed formal lab reports will be added to the notebooks after grading occurs. • Some universities will require you to show your laboratory notebook before granting the laboratory credit.

11. Rules Rule 1 Unless permission is granted, no student should be in the laboratory section of the room.

12. Rule 2 Be prepared for class. This means: • bring a pencil, pen, paper, and book to class (3 p’s and a b) • write down your homework assignments • check homework board for missed assignments • do your own homework • read labs when handed out prior to class

13. Rule 3 Be respectful of all members of the class and visitors. What this means: • Do not go digging into someone else’s materials (including mine) without permission • Keep your hands to yourself • When one person has the floor, you should listen • Do not talk over one another

14. 15. Rule 5 We all have our own space, respect it. This means: • We do not mess with the lab of other group. • We do not go into the lab prep room nor the chemical storage room. • Do not pilfer materials from others. • Do not take anything from this room without EXPRESS WRITTEN PERMISSION.

16. All other school rules will be enforced.

17. Lab Equipment You and your partner are responsible for cleaning up all your equipment before and after lab. This includes the removal of anything written on the glassware to identify the contents. You will not need to dry beakers. Air drying is sufficient. Return all materials to their original locations.

18. Observation Take out a piece of paper. At the top, write your name. Now watch the demonstration. Write down all your observations (be very thorough, five senses minus taste).

19. Observation Share with a seat partner your observations. Did you have the same? Did you have any that were different? Now think about using your observations to create reason for what has happened.

20. Homework Be prepare to list the classroom rules for your first quiz.
