Who is on the team? • “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, various kinds of tongues.” -1 Corinthians 12:27-28 (NRSV) • “Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.” -Luke 22:26
#1-Set Time and Place to Meet • The majority rules and moves! • Select a scribe. • Select a facilitator. • Select a contact person. • NOTE: Make regular and specific reports
#2-Define Goal/Mission of the Team • Don’t assume. • Make it short. • Make it memorable. • Repeat it often.
#3-What are the Gifts/Resources • Why did you join this team? • What are you bringing to the team? • How can the team expand its’ resources?
#4-What is History of Ministry? • What has already been accomplished? • What has already been attempted? • Don’t play the blame game. • Don’t play the hero worship game.
#5-What is possible? • Evaluations NOT allowed – yet. • What is continuing to work today? • What are other churches doing? • What is working in the community? • What are your wildest dreams? • Brief evaluations – NO final decisions.
#6-Stop and Pray • Resist your urge to fix it! • It is NOT about us! • Follow the Spirit for time of prayer/decision. • Don’t allow prayer to be an excuse.
#7-Agree on an Action Plan • Write out specific actions. Example: Grief Ministry Team Team member will call or visit immediate family member to determine needs of family during time of bereavement. • Include decision making criteria. Example: Hospital Visitation Team Team Facilitator will contact member on call within __ hours of notification of person hospitalized. Criteria: time, places, amounts, contents, number of people, etc.
#7-Action Plan continued • Delete ambiguous definitions “as needed” “may be necessary” “based on situation” “as soon as possible” “when appropriate” “to be determined” “probably not” “in case of”
#8-How members will contribute • Give specific assignments based upon stated resources/gifts. • Expect specific accountability.
#9-Discuss Your Progress • Meet to evaluate. • Funnel through mission statement. • Drop/Add. Be specific! • Repeat process: -annually -when new people are added to team • Continue to pray.
