  1. MARKING CENTREVyv Deacon • MARKERS • SENIOR MARKERS AND EXAMINERS • DEPARTMENTAL MARK CHECKERS • DATA CAPTURERS

  2. MARKERS • Record total mark for each question inside the script (at beginning of each question) as well as on the front cover of the answer book • No adding of marks or recording of the total is necessary • If an error has been made in the question paper and all candidates are to be given a certain number of marks to compensate for the error, then these marks must be added to the correct question, and not at the end • Marks scored by candidates cannot exceed the marks allocated for the subsection on the question paper • No half marks in totals for each question • For 2004, do NOT enter marks on marksheets and do not add up totals on front cover/flap of answer book

  3. Markers – cont (2) • No marks to be entered on marksheets unless otherwise instructed • No symbol distribution required by Department – individual examiners may use them if they so wish

  4. Markers – cont (3) • Ensure that each question total inside the answer book is transferred to the correct question number on the front cover/flap • Cross out questions that are not to be marked

  5. Markers – cont (4) • If an error has been made in the question paper and all candidates are to be given a certain number of marks to compensate for the error, then these marks must be added to the correct question, and not at the end

  6. Markers – cont (5) • Marks scored by candidates cannot exceed the marks allocated for the subsection on the question paper • No half marks in totals for each question

  7. Markers – cont (6) • For 2004, do NOT enter marks on marksheets and do not add up totals on front cover/flap of answer book

  8. SENIOR MARKERS AND EXAMINERS • Moderate 10% of scripts using green ink • Record total mark for each question inside the script (at beginning of each question) as well as on the front cover/flap of the answer book in green ink – the green mark is the official mark that is to be recorded

  9. Senior markers and examiners – cont (2) • Compare moderated mark for each question with marker’s mark to assess whether the marker is up to standard – should not be necessary to compare the totals to be able to take this decision. This allows for interaction with the marker on the marking of each question, not on the basis of whether the total balances out

  10. DEPARTMENTAL MARK CHECKERS • These people will be situated in four different buildings where the marking is taking place • Check if the scripts in the pack are for the marksheet and subject indicated

  11. Departmental mark checkers – cont (2) • Check if all the scripts for those indicated are present in the pack • Check if the scripts are in the order as indicated on the marksheet

  12. Departmental mark checkers – cont (3) • Check whether marker has deleted questions that are not to be marked • Check that everything has been marked, and that all sub-sections have been added up and recorded at the beginning of each question. Your total must agree with their total for each question

  13. Departmental mark checkers – cont (4) • Check that the total mark recorded next to each question has been correctly transferred to the front cover/flap • Report any errors to the supervisor immediately. Errors of more than 5 marks must be brought to the attention of the marker by the supervisor

  14. Departmental mark checkers – cont (5) • Add up marks inside the script only – may not use the marks on the front cover/flap • Where a script has been moderated in green ink, then the green marksonly must be added, irrespective of whether they are higher or lower than the original marks

  15. Departmental mark checkers – cont (6) • Add the last four digits of examination number to this total, and write this “hash total” at the bottom of the marks column on the front cover/flap • Write your mark checker number on the top right hand side of the marksheet

  16. Departmental mark checkers – cont (7) • Typing & Computyping – do NOT add wpm (at top of column) into totals

  17. DATA CAPTURERS • Data capturers capture the marks on the front cover/flap of the answer book as well as the hash total – be aware of wpm in Typ & Computyp • If this total is not the same as that on the computer, check marks entered. If marks captured are correct, then refer to supervisor for correction • Marks are captured in each building and transferred to the mainframe
