Personnel of the AIS: new competencies must be developed as part of a competency based development system Clients of the AIS: students and lecturers need the necessary skills to take part in telematic education and to use the Internet for research Performance gap
Training Challenge • Personnel of the AIS: the need for advanced competencies to develop the virtual information service • Clients of the AIS: lecturers and students need a high level of information literacy to function in the knowledge society
Target Population • Personnel of the AIS: total of 224; organized into 9 service units; most have a first degree • Clients of the AIS: 1 218 lecturers and 23 683 students; more than 40 000? distance students; 11 faculties. Large differences in information literacy
Training Solution • A Web-based interactive training solution: available as part of the virtual campus • Training solution:should include different media (text, sound, graphics etc) and formats (tutorials, simulations etc)
Training Objectives • Personnel of the AIS: must obtain the competencies to develop a virtual information service • Clients of the AIS: must be enabled to be effective personal information managers in the knowledge society
Course Content • Two aspects of the proposed information literacy training: • Computer training • Personal information management training
Evaluation Criteria • Personnel of the AIS: 360 degrees evaluation ; computer-based self-testing • Clients of the AIS: lecturers as part of the envisaged performance management system; students as part of curriculum evaluation
Instructional Strategy The Web-based information literacy training should use the relevant instructional strategy combinations: • computer-assisted instructional modes • instructional techniques • technology-assisted instructional techniques
Instructions Menus Screen layout Guidelines for the use of colour Guidelines for graphics Guidelines for animation Guidelines for sound Interactivity Motivation Individualisation Record keeping Writing style Design Specifications for Web-based Solution
Budget Implications • Implementation must be prioritized • Identify existing web-based technology solutions • Could form part of the Rector’s information technology plan budget
