  3. Today you’re going to learn how to use text features as clues to predict what the whole text is mostly about. You will also lean how to explain why you made that prediction.

  4. Team Cooperation Goal Everyone Participate.

  5. Building Background • The four friends in the DVD are using text features as clues to help them make predictions. • Who can give me an example of a text features? • I’d like you and your partner to look at this page from a newspaper and see if you can pick out the text features. You can use your stategy card to remind you of the text features.

  6. Building Background • Today Adam, Elinor, Amy, and David are going to predict what the brochure on the USS Constellation Museum in mostly about. I wonder which text features they will use as clues. Turn to the information about the USS Constellation on page 13 of your Student’s Viewing Guide, and have your Predicting Strategy Card handy as we follow along with them.

  7. Team Talk Let’s preview the questions. 1. What text features did Elinor use to predict that the brochure would be mostly about what visitors to the USS Constellations Museum will learn about the ship and the sailors? 2. Elinor said that the more clues you look for and think about the better your predictions will be. Do you agree with her? Why or why not? • How will Adam and Elinor find out if their predictions come true?

  8. DVD Viewing • Show part 2 of the DVD: “What’s It All About?” • (3 minutes)

  9. Team Discussion-35 Minutes • Discuss answers to team talk questions • Write answers to question 1 – 3 • View DVD if Necessary.

  10. Class Discussion • Review the questions and the team discussions? • View DVD if there is some doubt.

  11. Elinor and Adam predicted what they think the brochues on the Constellation will be mostly about. They each had a different prediction, but they both used clues in the text to explain their prediction. We’ll have to wait until we read the brochure to see whose prediction comes true. It will be fun to find out, won’t it?

  12. Predicto’s Challenge • Predicto had another challenge for us. It begins on page 3 of your Student’s Viewing Guide. Let’s read it.

  13. Greetings, Ladies and gentlemen, By listening to Elinor and Adam helped me figure out how to use clues to predict what a text is mostly about. I think the topic of the text on page 4 is pirates, but what do you think we’ll learn about pirates? • Using the clues, like the headings, illustrations, and captions, see if you can predict what the text will be mostly about—what you lean about pirates. • Compare predictions with your partners, them write the predictions and clues in your jourals. Good Luck! The Incredible Predicto.
