The Cell Part 4
Cell Membrane Regulates what enters and leaves the cell and provides protection and support for the cell Almost all cell membranes are made from a lipid bilayer (2 layers of lipids) with protein molecules that act as a channel or pump that allows molecules to move into or out of the cell Lots of the protein molecules have carbohydrate chains attached to them
Cell Wall Present in plants, algae, fungi, and many prokaryotes Not found in animal cells Surrounds the cell membrane Most cell walls are porous enough for water, oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through Main function of the cell wall is to provide support and protection for the cell
Cell Wall Most cell walls are made from fibers of carbohydrates and proteins that are produced within the cell and then released at the surface of the cell membrane where they are assembled to form the wall Plant cell walls are made mostly of cellulose (a tough carbohydrate fiber) Cellulose is the principle fiber of wood and paper
