Typology of Use of Power “Where there is conflict over values or a course of action one person/group can secure another’s compliance .......” 1. Exchange Something is traded 2. Persuasion Logical argument 3. Authority Recognition by the other that a command is “reasonable in terms of her own values” either because its content is legitimate and reasonable or because it was arrived at through a legitimate and reasonable procedure. 4. Force Stripping the other of choice between compliance or non compliance 5. Manipulation (a subset of force) Compliance is forthcoming in the absence of recognition on the part of the one complying either of the source or the exact nature of the demand upon him.
Power & Influence ‘inevitably evaluated and contested’ Operates at three levels: • Ability to prevail in overt conflicts • Ability to prevail through shaping the agenda and environment (may be no overt conflict) • Ability to shape the way people think about things (ideology)
