  2. Building capacity in RERC Click to return to main slide This support for staff illustrates how the experiences and outcomes in RERC might be taken forward using a collaborative approach between the secondary and primary sectors.

  3. Partnership working In this short introduction the headteacher emphasises the importance of partnership between the two sectors in taking the project forward. He places particular importance on the development of teaching strategies and methodologies which will provide experiences to resonate with the required outcomes. It reminds us that partnership in this curriculum area includes the home. Therefore the partnership is tri-partite in nature, ie Home-School-Parish. Learning and Teaching The importance of learning and teaching in the delivery of RERC ‘Catholic schools aim to help all students to develop their fullest potential, preparing them for life, informing their minds and forming their characters so that they can contribute with others, and with God, to the transformation of their world’. Learning and Teaching This video clip shows that essentially the content of what is taught in Religious Education in Catholic Schools will not change but reminds us that pedagogy will need to change if deeper understanding of particular topics and issues is to occur. It is suggested that classroom teachers will have to become familiar and skilled in the use of active learning approaches such as co-operative learning as part of this process of development. This allows teachers to benefit from the skills and approaches of others and bring what they have learned to their own teaching.   12. RERC in action This clip highlights the extent to which the experiences and outcomes in RERC resonates with the capacities of curriculum for excellence. They offer young people a foundation to develop as Global citizenship and as a means of viewing the world through a lens of their ‘faith journey’. Faith development Setting faith development in the context of “This Is Our Faith” The following quotes from This Is Our Faith support teachers’ understanding of the task in assisting the learner in their Journey of Faith through the delivery of the RERC experiences and outcomes. ‘At all, times however, Catholic teachers should be aware of their vocation to promote the distinctive beliefs, values and practices of the Catholic community.’ (Page 4) ‘The central purpose of religious education in the Catholic school is to assist learners to make an informed, mature response to God’s call to relationship. Religious education is designed to engage learners in an educational process...’ (Page 4) ‘The way in which a person increasingly matures in faith is not a simple progression towards intellectual consent, but is a much more holistic and complex process. It is a journey of unfolding encounter with God which takes place within the context of a person’s total experience of life.’ (Page 8)

  16. Faith development This video clip emphasises the place of the school in nurturing the child in Faith. This process begins in the home and is reinforced in the school. Faith development is a major focus for Catholic schools and therefore reinforces that the RERC experiences and outcomes are central to this delivery.   17. Faith development This video clip demonstrates how important it is that teachers are strong in their own Faith. Reciprocal visits can play a significant part in teachers development of Faith. This had the capacity to build teachers’ confidence in their own classroom practice.
