CHE Is • A multi-faceted,community-based, development strategy that deals with the WHOLE person which builds on the people’s and their the communities assets. CHE trains them how to use those assets to solve their own problem. It is about neighbor helping neighbor. • Releasing individuals & communities to be all they can be, by transforming individuals who transform their community from the inside out
CHE Is Used Worldwide • In 80 Countries • By 350 teams of which 2/3s are from other agencies, churches and denominations. • In over 2100 villages and urban neighborhoods. • There are support networks established in each country and Region that fosters teams learning from other teams.
Groups to Be Trained in CHE • Training Team- Initiates work in a target area and trains the other two groups. • Committee Members- Local leaders who oversee the program itself. • CHE Volunteers-Works who apply what they learn in their home and share with 10 to 15 neighbors
Training of Trainers (TOT) • Purpose: To equip trainers for implementing CHE in a local area. • Participants: People who will implement CHE programs and become trainers of CHEs and committees. • Materials: Three TOT Manuals and Lesson Plans for Trainers • Training Process: is divided into three phases with several months between each phase in order for trainees to practice what they have learned. The recommended time between Phase I and Phase II is 6-9 months and 4-9 months between Phase II and Phase III.
Training of Committee Members • Purpose: To train the local committee members in CHE concepts, their job responsibilities, including how to choose CHE volunteers. • Participants: Local people chosen to be committee members. • Materials: Committee Training • Process: A seven-day initial training curriculum consisting of three to four hours per day, generally one to two days per week until the seven days are completed. Then on-going training to build the committee’s capacity
Training of CHE’s • Purpose: To train local villagers in physical, emotional, social and spiritual topics chosen by the community. • Participants: Local villagers chosen to be CHEs. • Materials: 1000 or more CHE Lesson Plans • Process: The prime training target is the CHE. This training is carried out by the trainers after they have trained the committee members who then have chosen the CHEs. • The CHE trainees generally walk to a central point in their area one day a week for 40-50 days. Each training day they receive one physical and one spiritual subject. • They immediately put into practice what they have learned and visit in 10 to 15 neighbors’ homes sharing what they’ve learned.

How Done • Each lesson starts by presenting a simple problem posing: • Drama • Story • Picture • Starter is: • Simple • Presents Single Problem • Exaggerated so people laugh • Solution not presented, comes from participants
How Class Facilitated • All participants sit in one circle including facilitator • 80+% of answers come from participants • Facilitator adds what missing only at the end or by asking questions to draw them out. • Questions draw out multiple segments to an answers • Break into small groups each hour with each reporting back their answers • Use activities fostering application of what they learned. • Participants • Writing on flipchart and posting around room for whole training • Act out role plays • Read stories or Bible verses around the room by many
1500 Lesson Plans • Over 100 series with 1500 lessons that are • All designed in same format so once the participant knows how to teach from one they can teach from any one. • All designed at 4th grade level so neighbor can teach neighbor. Don’t need to be a professional. • Teaching content increase as education level of participants since all content comes from them
Picture Books • 45 Picture Books on Physical topics • 25 Picture books on Spiritual topics • Used by the CHE when they do home visiting and sharing with their neighbors. • Format Tri-fold: • What is the disease • Causes • When go to seek medical care • How prevent • How treat
Keys to Seeing Teaching Take • Keep teaching participatory • Focus on learner not teacher • Be concerned with multiplication, who you teach, will teach others. • Keep materials simple so lay people can teach • Deal with all elements of a person’s life over time not just disease or business etc.
