Ch.1 The Alaska Interior • Wrote a post card to Wayne Westerberg • Jim Gallien- Trucker who picked up Alex (Chris McCandless) and dropped him off on the Stampede Trail. • GallienSupplies given to Alex (Chris): 1.Water Boots 2.Food 3.His number • Alex (Chris) was very unprepared: Old Map, Small caliber gun, not much food (10lb bag of rice), and not appropriate clothing. Had no hunting license and was afraid of water. • Gallien decided not to report Alex(Chris) to the Rangers, figured he would make it out.
Ch.2The Stampede Trail Key Facts • Favorite author: Jack London • Bus was Left from an old construction Project during the 1960s. • Six people (3 separate groups) found Chris’s body: Ken Thompson Gordon Samel Ferdie Swanson A couple from Anchorage Butch Killian ( the one who called in Chris’s death on his radio) 4. Left note for anyone who came asking to be rescued 5. Cause of death was starvation and it took awhile to ID it as Chris because of lack of Identification 6. Found with the body: Camera with film, SOS note, Diary ( with notes about edible plants, recordings about final weeks)
Ch.3Carthage • Setting Carthage S. Dakota • Wayne Westerberg- owns a grain elevator. • Picked up Alex and hired him. • Chris gave Wayne the Name Alex McCandless when Wayne picked him up. Chris said his destination was Saco Hot Springs. • Rubber Tramp- vagabonds (travelers) who own a vehicle Leather Tramp- travelers who walk or hitchhike • Chris, Wayne and some other guys they worked with would always hang out at the local bar called the Cabaret. • Westerberg was arrested by FBI for his “Black Box” scheme, which allowed people to watch Satellite TV with out paying for it. • Chris gave Westerberg a copy of Tolstoy’s War and Peace • Chris stayed in touch with Westerberg and had all his mail transferred to South Dakota ( adopting it as his semi-home) • Chris was from Annandale, Virginia. • Chris parents: Walt McCandless (Father)- worked as an eminent aerospace engineer for NASA Billie McCandless (mother)- business partner for Walt Total of 7 siblings ( 6 were half-siblings from fathers other marriage) Chris went to Emory University, Worked for the School newspaper The Emory Wheel, refused to join Phi Beta Kappa because title and honors were irrelevant. Chris donated the rest of his college fund ( what his parents though he would use it for law school) to a charity called OXFAM that fought hunger. Change his name to Alexander Supertramp.
Ch.4 Detrital Wash • Chris’s Yellow Datsun was found under a tarp by National Park Service ranger Bud Walsh. • The License Plates had been taken off, but the doors were unlocked. The floorboards were plastered with mud. • When the rangers went to jump start the Datsun, it started with ease. • When they searched the Vin number on the Datsun, it reported that it had NOT been associated with any crimes. • Chris had originally camped in Detrital Wash area just after graduating college, and was still excited to start his journey. Chris was so excited that he ignored the Flash Flood warnings and got caught in one. The flash flood temporarily flooded the engine. • Chris in his impatiens tried to start the car multiple times and drained the Datsun’s battery. • Chris decides to abandon the Datsun and continue on foot. He concealed the car (under the tarp), hid his license plates, buried his gun, and burned all of his currency ( money). We know all of this because it was in his journal that he left with Wayne. In the journal he talks about all he did and that it was true because telling the truth was a Credo he took seriously. • Chris then starts to hitchhike and is eventually picked up by Jan Burres and her boyfriend Bob. She notices that he is really hungry.
Ch.4 Cont. • Shortly before meeting Jan Burres, Chris was ticketed for Hitchhiking. • Chris uncharacteristically slipped up and gave the ticketing officer his real name and his parents address in Annandale Virginia. • Chris then moved on to Needless California where he came to the Colorado River. • Chris bought a second- hand Canoe and paddled down the Colorado river. • He wrote a postcard to Wayne to update him on his journey. • Chris entered into Mexico by paddling through an open Floodgate in the Morelos Dam.
Ch.5 Bullhead City • Chris stops journaling for a little bit since he messed up his camera. • A letter Chris sent to Jan Burres we know that by October he was in Bullhead City, Arizona. Where he stayed for about 2 months. • He worked at McDonald’s, where he used his real name Chris McCandless and his real social security number. • One of the things his managers at McDonalds noticed was that he hated to wear socks. • His Manager Lori Zarza thinks he finally quit because of her and his co-workers pressuring him about his poor hygiene. • From Bullhead City he reconnected with Jan Burres in a place called the Slab. • Chris helped Jan with her book stand and commented on how Chris liked the classics. She said Jack London was his favorite. • Jan also commented about the fact that he was a Musician and singer. • The only thing Chris had ever said about his background to Jan was that he was from the D.C. area.
