What is the Medical Reserve Corps? • A specialized component of the President's USA Freedom Corps, which promotes volunteerism and service throughout the nation. • Volunteer emergency medical resource • Local units are administered by County, City, or State agencies (Fire Dept, Sheriff, Public Health, etc.) throughout the country • 865 units across America • Institutionalized after 9/11

  3. Mission Statement • The mission of the Santa Barbara County MRC is: • To develop partnerships with the medical profession (active and retired). • Aid in the education, training and deployment of citizen volunteers and resources in the event of a large scale, local emergency.

  4. Vision • The vision of the Santa Barbara County MRC is: • To enlist citizen volunteers to assist in the establishment of an organized pool of resources capable of being deployed to support Emergency and Medical Management Systems already in place in the event of a major emergency.

  5. Purpose The purpose of the Santa Barbara County MRC is: • Organize and train healthcare professionals to respond to the specific needs of the community, thereby enhancing local emergency response efforts, especially during large-scale local emergencies. • Provide reserve capacity at the community level to respond to local public and community health needs and education. • Create a framework to match medical volunteers’ skills with the community’s needs. • Draw health professionals into volunteer service.

  6. Who is the MRC Affiliated With? • Sponsored by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General. • Supported by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority. • Funded by the National Association of City and County Health Officials (and the Orfalea Aware and Prepare Initiative in Santa Barbara).

  7. Who Are Our Local Partners? • Partner Organizations: • Santa Barbara County Public Health Department • Santa Barbara EMS Agency • Doctors Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine • Direct Relief International • Orfalea Foundation

What Background do I need to Become an MRC Volunteer? • Medical Volunteers • Medical/clinical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, nurses' assistants, among others. • Public health professionals such as health educators and epidemiologists. • Non-medical volunteers • Communications experts • Logisticians • Translators • Public Safety Experts

  9. MRC Functions in times of non-emergency • Drills, Exercises, and Trainings • Skills refreshers • Community Events • First Aid Stations • Health Education/Community Outreach • Vaccination Clinics

How Do I Sign Up? • Go to www.sbcphd.org/ems/mrc • Click on the Register Here! link on the left menu • Follow the registration steps outlined there including: Register online in the DHV database: https://medicalvolunteer.ca.gov/ • This database confirms licensure of volunteers and is used to deploy volunteers in an emergency
