AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS FOR LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT IN AFRICA: UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES by PROF. BASSEY A. NDON, BOARD CHAIR, PROPOSED WEST AFRICAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (WAUSTECH) ITA URUAN, NIGERIA
DEFINITIONS AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS: THE SCIENCE, ARTS AND BUSINESS OF CULTIVATING SOILS, PRODUCING CROPS, RAISING LIVESTOCK AND FISH FARMING LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT: SUSTAINABLE FOOD AVAILABILITY, FOOD SECURITY, POVERTY REDUCTION TO ELIMINATE HUNGER AND MAINTAIN LIFE UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCE: TYPICAL SUCCESSFUL EXAMPLES IN AFRICA
MAJOR FACTORS THAT BRING ABOUT DIVERSITIES IN AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IN AFRICA GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION CLIMATE & SOILS AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY ADAPTATION PREVAILING CULTURE
Rainforest Region: Tree Crops, Timber, TuberCrops, Banana/Plantain,Fisheries, Poultry, Sheep & Goats, Piggery Woodland Region: Arable Crops, Tree Crops, Cereal Crops, Fruits and Vegetables, Poultry, Cattle, Sheep & Goats and Pigs Savannah Region: Cereal Crops, Tuber Crops, Cattle, Sheep & Goats, Poultry Desert or Arid Region: Cattle, Sheep & Goats, Poultry, Date Palm, Donkeys, Cereal, Camels Meditteranean Region: Fruits & Vegetables, Arable Crops, Cereals, Fish, Cattle, Poultry, Camels, Donkeys SUMMARY OF THE MAJOR AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS IN AFRICA
COMMON CROPS AND LIVESTOCK IN AFRICA MAJOR CROPS CEREALS: (Maize, guinea corn, rice & millet) LEGUMES: (Cowpea, groundnut and soyabean) TUBERS: (Cassava, yam, cocoyam and sweet potato) VEGETABLES: (Lettuce, fluted pumpkin, tomato) FRUITS: (Mango, citrus , pineapple, water melon) OIL SEEDS: (Oilpalm, coconut, melon) BEVERAGES: (Tea, coffee, cocoa, kola nut) LATEX: Rubber FIBRE: (Cotton, kenaff) STIMULANT: (Pepper, ginger) LIVESTOCK AND FISHES CATTLE: ( BEEF, DIARY) POULTRY: (CHICKEN, TURKEY, DUCK) PIGGERY: SWINE SHEEP & GOATS: SHEEP AND GOATS GAME ANIMAL: CAMEL, DONKEY, HORSES RABBITS: RABBITS FISHERIES: INLAND FISHING AND FISH PONDS
MAJOR FACTORS THAT REDUCES AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIONIN AFRICA LACK OF CAPITAL PESTS AND DISEASE PROBLEMS POOR IRRIGATION SYSTEM INADEQUATE LAND SUPPLY AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM INADEQUATE LABOUR INADEQUATE PROCESSING AND STORAGE SYSTEM POOR MECHANIZATION & TECHNOLOGY LACK OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
CONCLUSION AFRICAN SCIENTISTS, FARMERS, AGRICULTURISTS AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES MUST COME TOGETHER IN ANOTHER WORKSHOP TO BRING UP TO DATE INFORMATION ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION, POVERTY REDUCTION AND FOOD SECURITY IN AFRICA. THE PROBLEMS OF LACK OF FUNDING, INADEQUATE INFRASTRACTURE, IRRIGATION, PROCESSING AND STORAGE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE MUST BE ADDRESSED.
