“Coming of Age” Defined: • Definition: A young person's transition from childhood to adulthood. • When a young adult learns the realities of the world and that life is not perfect. • Moving away from the innocence of childhood and into maturity and understanding.
Struggle with Identity Definition: A young person’s difficulty in discovering their own individual identity, not just how others in their lives view them or want them to be. Example: A high school freshman deciding that he would rather participate in the marching band instead of playing football like the rest of his family.

Example: A teenager may feel the need to dress and act a certain way in order to fit in after they move to a new school where they don’t know anyone.
Difficulty with Family Relationships Definition: The problems that arise within a family that cause conflict (including issues like divorce, financial problems, and conflicts with parents and siblings). Example: A parent losing a job that forces the family to relocate and move in with another relative.
Challenging Authority Definition: A young person purposefully going against the beliefs or directions of an authority figure in their lives (sometimes for a specific reason). Example: A teenager secretly continuing to use their laptop even though their parents have punished them by taking away computer privileges.
Loss of Innocence/ Gaining Knowledge Definition: When a young person is forced to give up their childish and immature thoughts and feelings because of certain events. Example: A teen is forced to drop out of school and go to work because his father gets sick and cannot support the family.
Achieving of Goals Definition: When a young person is able to meet difficult personal goals that they have set for themselves, sometimes with the help of others. Example: A student manages to be the valedictorian for her school after four years of hard work and dedication.
Increase in Maturity Definition: A young person’s ability to cope with difficult situations in a reasonable and appropriate way. Example: Instead of acting out after receiving a bad grade in a class, the student instead goes to discuss the issue with the teacher in private.
Better Understanding of the World and Others Definition: When events cause a young person to realize that there are more important issues beyond their own experience and gain a more complex understanding of people in their lives. Example: A teen realizes that her mother pushes her in athletics because she wanted to be an athlete when she was younger.
