Hyndburn Studio School • A partnership between Accrington and Rossendale College and Rhyddings Business Enterprise School • St Christopher’s C of E High School also supporting • Supports local priorities to: • Raise aspiration and achievement • Tackle the challenges of skills shortages • Located at Waterside in centre of Accrington

  4. Studio Schools Nationally • Field trials 2008-2010 outstanding results • First 2 opened 2010 • 6 more opened 2011 • 12 to open Sept 2012 • Hyndburn – first in Lancashire

  5. What is a Studio School? “ …a new state school model for 14 to 19 year olds of all abilities . . . Which seeks to address the growing gap between what young people require to succeed in life and the skills that the current education system provides”

  6. 2 Key Issues • Employers find it difficult to recruit young people who are `work ready` • Some young people `grow out of` school, often around the age of 14, and do not achieve their full potential in school

  13. Different Ways of Learning • Practical projects, linked to a chosen career pathway • Vocational workshops in a chosen subject • Subject specific GCSE classes to prepare for exams • One to one and small group coaching sessions • Supported homework sessions • Learning at work – work placement

Who is it for? • Young people age 14-19 of all abilities who: • May not reach their full potential in a traditional school environment • Could achieve A, B, or C grades at GCSE, but likely to underachieve in school • Want a mix of GCSE and vocational learning • Thrive in a practical, hands on learning environment • Have a specific career pathway in mind • Are ready for a more adult learning environment
