Soil Horizons ORGANIC LAYER (O-Horizon) • The uppermost layer; rich in organic material • Plant litter accumulates in the O-horizon and gradually decays • In deserts, O-horizon is completely absent • In Organically rich soils, O-horizon may be the dominant layer
Soil Horizons TOPSOIL LAYER (A-Horizon) • Dark and rich in accumulated organic matter and humus • Granular texture • Somewhat nutrient-poor because nutrients are lost to deeper layers through a process called infiltration
Soil Horizons SUBSOIL LAYER (B-Horizon) • Light-colored subsoil beneath the A horizon layer • Where nutrient minerals and topsoil accumulate after leaving the A horizon • Typically rich in iron, aluminum compounds, and clay
Soil Horizons PARENT MATERIAL LAYER (C-Horizon) • Contains weathered pieces of rock • Often saturated with groundwater • Roots of most plants don’t go down this deep
Exit Ticket (on a separate piece of paper) • Michael and Jeff can’t seem to agree. Michael argues that porosity and permeability are the same thing. Jeff is convinced that that they are different. • Who is correct? Explain your choice using detailed, complete sentences.
