The Way Ahead • What have we learnt? • How to get more experience with Unix Administration • Books • Further training
What Have We Learnt • Unix administration is not easy • administration shells help but are not a complete answer • Unix administrators have to learn a lot about Unix • Different systems are administered in different ways • RedHat / SuSE • SVR4 (Solaris 2, HP/UX, IRIX) • BSD (SunOS 4.1) • OSF/1 (AIX, Digital Unix) • Unix contains lots of sub-systems • each sub-system has its own method of administration • no consistency between sub-systems
What Next? • Concentrate on a small part of Unix • learn to administer this part first • gradually work with more and more areas • RTM (Read The Manuals) • Talk to colleagues about your system • Make use of your manufacturer's technical support staff when you have problems and queries
