  1. Addressing the Requirements Outlined in the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act Organ Procurement Organization Committee Fall 2014

  2. The Problem • Current policy prohibits recovering or transplanting an organ from a deceased donor with HIV • The HIV Organ Policy Equity Act - November 21, 2013

  3. Goal of the Proposal • To concurrently amend OPTN policies to allow members to participate in the research study

  4. How the Proposal will Achieve its Goal • OPOs accurately document HIV test results for every deceased donor • Before recovering and transplanting organs infected with HIV: • Transplant hospital must confirm the potential recipient is known to be HIV infected prior to transplant • Transplant hospital must participate in an institutional review board approved research protocol that meets the requirements in the Final Rule

  5. Additional Background • This proposal is a first step to amend OPTN policies to allow members to participate in the research study • A second proposal will be distributed for public comment in January 2015 with additional policy changes and requirements

  6. Additional Information • Board review – June 2015 • If approved by the Board, effective date as outlined in the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act – Nov. 21, 2015
