  3. About Me • Graduated from Morehouse and GA Tech via the Dual Degree Engineering Program • Earned several fellowships including FACES, Packard, and NASA/Harriett Jenkins Fellowships • Active on campus and in the community • Received Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2007

  4. Brief Background of ScanTech·IBS • ScanTech Holdings, LLC. is the parent company for several businesses, each with their own unique focus. • Identification Beam Systems, LLC. (IBS) was formed in early 2002 to respond to the worldwide terrorist threat. The present company was formed based on ten years of research and development, engineering and testing of advanced x-ray security inspection systems. • ScanTech, a start-up company that spawned in the ATDC (graduated in 2007), provides sophisticated high-energy electron beam and X-ray inspection systems. • Serving diverse industries and government, ScanTech is developing innovative, cost effective systems for protecting the health and well being of the general public. Program Engineer • Perform experiments and develop empirical models • Assist in the development of algorithms for material discrimination • Design mechanical structures and pneumatic systems • Interact with vendors for sourcing components • Research TSA requirements and ensure these are implemented within the design • Resolve “issues” that arise during prototype production

  7. “Typical” Day • Perform literature reviews to assist in product development • Analyze data and create internal reports regarding product performance • Refine engineering design through hands-on development • Meet with executives to ensure technical progress is in line with customer expectations

  8. Why Did I Choose a Startup? • To broaden my technical skills quickly • To work in fast paced often hectic environment • To have a closer vantage point of how decisions are being made • To have an opportunity to work on numerous projects • To have an opportunity to hit a financial homerun

  10. Self Assessment • Are you practical or theoretical? • Do you like science for its own sake or does your passion lie in trying to make things work? • What’s your risk tolerance? • What elements need to be a part of your career for you to be happy?
