  1. The Boston Tea Party, The Intolerable Acts, and the Quartering Act, K. Williams, PRES

  2. Remember that the colonists in America were very made about the acts the king set up.

  3. In 1773, England wanted to trick people with a tax. They told the colonists that tea did not cost as much any more. They wanted the tea to cost less so the extra tax money would be hidden.

  4. The trick did not work and no one wanted to buy tea.

  5. In December 1773, angry colonists in Boston, Massachusetts dressed up like Native Americans. They got on a ship in the Boston Harbor.

  6. The people threw 342 chests of tea into the water! The king was very angry!

  7. The king said no more ships could go into the harbor unless people paid for the tea.

  8. The king also sent more soldiers to America. He wanted the soldiers to stay in people’s houses.

  9. The king still wanted to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. In 1774, ships were still not allowed in the Boston Harbor.

  10. The king also said that colonists in Massachusetts could not make their own decisions any more. He said that people were not allowed to meet in groups to share ideas.

  11. The colonists called this “intolerable” because they were so mad. These things were the Intolerable Acts.

  12. Many soldiers from England were living in America.

  13. It cost money to have the soldiers. England and the king wanted the colonists to help pay. Back in 1765, they passed a new law called the Quartering Act.

  14. It was called this because it said colonists had to let soldiers stay in their houses. Houses are sometimes called quarters.

  15. The law also said that the colonists had to give the soldiers food, candles, and more. People did not like this and some were mean to the soldiers.

  16. All of these things made the colonists very angry. They were ready to fight!
