How Did We Get Here? • RHIC & AGS Users’ Executive Committee • RHIC/AGS needs to do something for students • Brookhaven’s Quality of Life Committee • Laboratory needs to do something for students • Investigate and provide a proposal to QOL • Spoke to Department Chairs, ALDs, students, Light Source, anyone who would listen • Looked at other Laboratories • Los Alamos National Laboratory • FERMI Lab

Students at BNL • Students come into BNL through • Office of Educational Programs • BNL Department • User Facility • Types of Students • K through 12 • Undergraduate, graduate, post-doc • Visiting (short-term and long-term) • In-residence • Limited year-round social and educational programs for students

Mission of Student Organization at BNL • Foster communication • among students • between students and Laboratory organizations • Advocate for visiting and resident students • Departments, BNL community, BNL management • Improve the quality of life for students • Improve educational opportunities at BNL

  6. Vision for Organization • Student Organization • elected students with BNL representatives • Charter for Organization • Calendar of Events • educational & social, on-site & off-site • Student Web Page • Develop Communications Channel • BNL departments and management

  7. What Do We Hope to Accomplish Today • Find out if students want a voice at BNL • Appoint interim student representatives • Recommend three student representatives to work with existing committee • Distribute student surveys

Student Rep Responsibilities WORK WITH EXISTING COMMITTEE (BNL representatives will provide guidance) • Formulate a student program that includes year-round social and educational events • Draft a charter for student organization • Appoint subcommittees to handle: • Elections, activities, web page, etc.

  9. How Can You Help Work on a subcommittee If you’re willing to help, there will be a job for you

  10. What Do We Hope to Accomplish by September • Compile results of student survey • Finalized student program that includes year-round social and educational events • Prepare a proposal for the BSA Board Meeting on September 13th
