Competition and Predation • Competition and Predation are twoimportantways in whichorganismsinteract • These are justtwoexamples of themanyinteractionsbetweenspecies in anecosystem • http://www.berglabs.org/projects.shtml
Competition • Occurswhentwoorganismsfightforthesamelimitedresources. • There are twodifferenttypes of competition: Interspecific and Intraspecificconpetition. • Interspecificcompetitionoccurswhentwodifferencspecies compete for a limitedsource, such as space. • Intraspecificcompetitionoccursamongmember of thesamespecies
Predation • Theprocessbywhichoneorganism captures and feedsuponanotherorganism. • Manyorganismshavebecomehighlyadaptedtohunting and killingtheirprey. • http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/rattlesnake-vs-rat-predation
Symbiosis & Mutualism By:Gustavo Sa
Symbiosis Vocab. Definition: “A relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each other.” Symbiosis can be beneficial or harmful. There are 3 major types of symbiosis: -Mutualism -Commensalism -Parasitism
Mutualism A major type of symbiotic relationship. In this relationship both organisms benefit from one another. Ex: The long-nosed bat and the saguaro cactus. The bats help pollinate the cactus, when they fly from one to the other to feed on it’s nectar. http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/pollinators/pollinator-of-the-month/lesser_long-nosed_bat.shtml
Commensalism- type ofsymbioticrelationship- • Relationshipbetweentwoorganisms • 1 recievesecologicalbenefitfromanother • Otheroneisunaffected • Example: - deep in thehairfollicesofyoureyelashesmight bemicroscopiemitescallesdemodicidswho foundtheirhighlyspecializedniche in yourhair follicesandfeed on thesecretionsanddead skincells
Parasitism- another type ofsmybioticrelationship- • Relationshipbetweentwoorganismssimilartoprediation • 1 organismbenefits • Otherone ( thehost ) isharmed • Differencebetweenparatismandprediation: - predatorquicklyeatsandkills ist prey - parasitekeepsithostalivefordaysoryears Example: - braconidwasplaysitegssinsidecaterpillar - larvaehatch -> eatcaterpillarfrominside out - consumenutrientstheyneeduntiltheygrowtoadulds
