UNIV 200 What to expect after UNIV 112
Basics • UNIV 200 is REQUIRED for almost ALL MAJORS • Writing Intensive course • The goal of the course is to write one 13-15 page research paper on the topic of your choice. If you can make some kind of position or take some kind of stand on the subject, you can write about it!!
Class Layout • Most professors use the class time for “writing workshops” that pertain to whichever part of the writing process you are currently on with your paper • Some will provide library / computer lab time to work on parts of the paper i.e. Annotated Bibliographies
Example Topics • The Rising Popularity of Vampires over time • Why Cupcakes have become so popular in the current Economy • The Scientific possibility of a Zombie Apocalypse • Whether or not Advertising is an art form • ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS • Topic Proposal & Research Questions • Annotated Bibliography/s • Review of Literature • Outline of Paper • Rough Draft • Final Paper • Reflective Cover Letter
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIES • Most require anywhere between 8 to 12 sources (most aim for 10) total • Every Source gets an Annotation • Many (but not ALL) will have them due 3-5 at a time over the course of a month or so • T/R classes- One due every Thursday
UNIV 112 Each about the length of a paragraph Includes summary, strengths and weaknesses of the Source End Up being 2-5 pages UNIV 200 Each about 4 paragraphs to one page Includes summary, strengths and weaknesses and how you plan to use the source End up being 10 pages or so AnnotationsUNIV 112 vs. UNIV 200
UNIV 112 Includes how you plan to use each source Ends up being about 2-4 pages long UNIV 200 “conversation” between your sources If your sources were guests at a dinner table, who would be talking with who about what Ends up being about 7+ pages Ends up being very similar to your final draft but without your “voice” Review of Research
Highlights/Lowlights • Most Time Consuming: Annotated Bibliographies • Hardest to Complete: Review of Research • Once you write this, the Final Draft comes very easily
Workload • During the Fall / Spring semester the assignments are spread out overtime, with something due each week • During the Summer, there is less time and therefore more of a workload • Good to take alone in the summer of if you do not plan on working a lot outside of class(es)
Expectations • Most teachers are VERY helpful and will give you any help you may need along the way without much penalty • You are expected to participate in workshops/discussions in class. These are only there to help YOU
Recommended Professors • Melinda White (Erin) • Catherine Macdonald (Dana) • Patrick Dacey*(Phillip) • Mary Mullins (Prof. Byrd) • Mary Boyes (Prof. Byrd) • Careful not to pick his wife who • also works at VCU
Tips • Ask Questions • Participate • The Workshops • Class Discussions • Peer Review • Get to know your Professor • Gets you *some* leverage if you are stuck • The better they know you, the better they can understand your writing and help you • Spread your work out • Annotations • Review of Research
More Tips • Use Headings in your Paper • Headings make each section feel like “mini papers” and makes it easier to tackle a large paper • Improves Flow • Don’t Stress • Choose Something you’re REALLY interested in • You will have to live with it ALL SEMESTER • Good Practice for higher level classes
