Uniforms Can Be Memorable for the Wrong Reasons If it seems like we are obsessed with uniforms here at Alsco, it’s probably because we pioneered uniform rental in the U.S. in the 1800s. For more than 130 years we have been providing our clients with high-quality, good-looking uniforms that present just the right image. We’ve been at this long enough to know uniforms should be memorable. We also know they can be memorable for the wrong reasons. The last thing you want is for your uniforms to be remembered because they are, shall we say, less than fashionable. A uniform that customers find unappealing could deter them from doing business with you. As an example, the We Are The Mighty website recently published a post discussing what it considers the “goofiest looking military uniforms” in the world. We don’t know that the chosen uniforms actually look goofy, but they certainly are memorable. Let’s discuss a few of them. Britain’s Yeomen Warders Known informally as Beefeaters, the Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace must be of the finest quality and have at least 22 years of military service to be part of this unit. Their uniforms are bright red and feature high white collars and black top hats. Beefeaters look less like military personnel and more like Elizabethan ushers standing by to help tourists find their way around the palace.
The uniforms are so memorable that the mere mention of the word Beefeater conjures up images of exactly what they look like. Unfortunately, said uniforms don’t do much to display the true military capabilities of the soldiers who wear them. Ugandan Air Force At first glance, the uniforms worn by the Air Force arm of the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces look like standard issue camouflage. But on closer inspection the camouflage design seems to be a mix of air, sea and land. They certainly stand out, but is that really the point of camouflage? Spanish Legion The Spanish Legion is an elite unit of the Spanish army and part of the country’s Rapid Reaction Force. It was originally established in the 1920s to be Spain’s military force in Africa. Today, the Legion is used primarily to addressSpain’s contribution to U.N. peacekeeping forces. One of the things that makes the Legion’s uniform so strikingly memorable is the shirt. It is purposely designed with a plunging neckline that shows quite a bit of chest. It’s not what you would expect from a genuine military unit. Instead, some of the more muscle-bound soldiers who wear it look more like entertainers of a certain variety. Uniforms that Send the Right Message We have all the respect in the world for fighting men and women who don the uniform. We understand they don’t get a choice in the uniforms they wear. So what’s the point? It’s to remember that uniforms send a certain message. Your company’s uniforms should send the right message. Uniforms are a big part of a company’s brand. As such, all customer-facing employees should be wearing uniforms that are remembered for the right reasons. They are uniforms that represent your organization well. Alsco ensures your uniforms are classy, respectful, well-tailored and befitting of the industry to which they pertain.
