Faith, hope, charity, all the rest don’t become virtues until it takes courage to exercise them. Courage is not only the basis of all virtue; it is its expression.

Factors that Strengthen Military Ethos DISCIPLINE "Discipline is teaching which makes a man do something which he would not, unless he had learnt that it was the right, the proper, and the expedient thing to do. At its best, it is instilled and maintained by pride in oneself, in one’s unit, in one’s profession; only at its worst by a fear of punishment."

Factors that Strengthen Military Ethos LEADERSHIP The leaders’ responsibility is to elicit, by example and direction, all the qualities of soldiering in their subordinates, so as to achieve their purpose.   12. The Building and Maintenance of Military Ethos THE VALUES AND STANDARDS OF THE ARMY The Values and Standards of the Army are not just a list of qualities required of each individual soldier. They are also the collective responsibilities of the whole Army, and each of its constituent units. They are the foundations of teamwork, which multiplies the Fighting Power of each individual. They are interdependent: if any of them are lacking, the others - and hence the team -are threatened. They are fostered and enhanced by good leadership, training, motivation and management, throughout the chain of command.
