  1. Ethos 2.19

  2. With a partner/trio... • Consider the three big components of ethos that EAA presents, and find specific passages in Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Against Meat” that pinpoint where he does these things: (Hint: Taking notes will help you to do the later part of this assignment that you will turn in) • How does he establish his trustworthiness/credibility? (46) • How does he claim authority? (50) • How does he “come clean about motives?” (52) Remember – don’t just locate these things in the text. Consider HOW J.S.F. does these things.

  3. Still with your pair/trio… Review page 114 and 115 in your textbook regarding how to formulate claims in rhetorical analysis. Together, develop a one sentence claim about the various ways that Jonathan Safran Foer develops his ethos in “Against Meat” and how they work (or don’t work) to persuade the reader. You may also consider in your claim why he chooses the strategies he does for his purposes. Key to this is identifying what, exactly, Jonathan Safran Foer wants you to believe or do by the end of his argument. Shoot for complexity and accuracy!

  4. Now, on your own… Write an essay (1-2 notebook pages – please use physical paper) using evidence from the text (quotes) to prove the claim that your group just composed. You may, of course, alter the wording of the claim as you see fit. I want to see paragraphing, adequate introductions to quotes (J.S.F. said, “….”), etc. Take this seriously as a piece of writing.
