Explore how religious beliefs correlate with the belief in the metaphysical, focusing on the influence of religion on people's beliefs in ghosts. Conducted a statistical analysis using a Two Proportion Z-Test to examine the relationship. Results indicate a significant difference in belief between religious and non-religious individuals.

TItle page/introduction The general population has been growing more and more curious of the metaphysical. We see it in pop culture; Insidious chapters, the babadook, Sinister, Paranormal Activity...etc.It’s all great entertainment but how many people actually believe in this stuff? We know from experience that people who live by religious principles tend to be less likely to believe in something they can’t see. But let’s see ooorrrkksssmkfm We are interested in the influence religion has on people's beliefs in the metaphysical. In this experiment, we will be looking at the proportion of people who do not believe in ghosts being religious or not religious.
Data collection Simple Random Sample - We put the names of 15 teachers on paper slips and put the slips into a hat. Without looking we drew five names. These were the classes we surveyed. Religious people who believe = 5 Religious people who don’t believe = 35 Non-religious people who believe = 30 Religious people who don’t believe = 39
According to the graph, though there is not much of a difference between people who believe and their religion, there is a huge difference in the people who do not believe in ghosts and their religion. We observe that many more people who do not identify as religious do not believe in ghosts than people who do identify as religious. 52.7% 47.2% 85.7% 14.3%
Parameters Hypothesis P1: The proportion of all religious people who do not believe in ghosts. P2: The proportion of all non-religious people who do not believe in ghosts. Ho: P1-P2=0 same as P1=P2 The factor of religion does not affect whether or not someone believes in ghosts. Ha: P1-P2<0 If someone is religious, they are more likely to not believe in ghosts.
Assumptions Random: We took a simple random sample of 109 students and teachers at Washburn High School. Normal: Approximately normal by LCC… but only 3 of the 4 outcomes were at least 10. Therefore the normal condition can not be met, but we continue on with the experiment anyhow. Independent: We are sure that there are more than 400 religious people in Washburn and at least 609 non-religious people. The independent assumption is met by the 10% condition.
Name of Inference Procedure Two Proportion Z-Test
Test Statistic The following equation used to find the Z score. Then the P-value was found with that Z Obtain P-Value Then the P-value was found with that Z
Make a decision Because the P-value IS significant at the 5% level, we reject the null hypothesis that religion does not have an effect on one’s belief in ghosts.
State Conclusion in Context of the Problem There is strong evidence that there is a difference in the proportion of all religious people who do not believe in ghosts and the proportion of all non-religious people who do not believe in ghosts.
