  3. without realizing it, people typically interject communication barriers or blocks into conversation 90% of the time communication barriers trigger resistance, defensiveness, resentment, withdrawal, and feelings of inadequacy they also decrease the likelihood of finding a solution EFFECTS

  4. A List of Barriers to Communication • criticizing by making a negative evaluation of persons, their actions or attitudes • analyzing why a person is behaving the way he/she is • praising by making a positive judgment of a person, or his/her actions or attitudes

A List of Barriers to Communication • ordering: commanding the other person to do what you want • threatening: trying to control the other person’s actions by warning of negative consequences you will impose • moralizing: preaching, telling someone what she or he should do • inappropriate questions, like “are you sorry you did it?”
