U.S. Census & Federal Funding From these seven programs Massachusetts received over $8.2 billion in FY2007 and over $6.3 billion in FY2006. • Medicaid • Highway Planning and Construction • Title I Grants to Local Education Agencies • Foster Care • Federal Mass Transit Grants • Community Development Block Grants • Nutrition Program to Women, Infants, and Children

  4. American Community Survey (ACS) December 2010 -- The Census Bureau released the first set of 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for all geographic areas, regardless of size, using data collected between 2005 and 2009.

  5. What Topics Does the 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) cover? • ACS is a good source of data on social characteristics, economics, and living arrangements. • ACS is NOT a source of demographic data • Census 2010 will provide data on age distribution, race and segregation, total population counts and growth, and other demographic questions. We cannot answer these questions using ACS.

How You Can Use the ACS 5-Year Estimates • ACS data allow us to make statements about the percentage of people with a given attribute and about distributions of variables. • Using the ACS 5-year estimates, you may compare places to other places • You may compare ACS 5-year estimates to Census 2000 estimates in many cases

  7. How You Can Use the ACS 5-YearEstimates • Enable us to see what is happening with individual municipalities, Census tracts, and even block groups • The 2005-2009 data are based on five times more data than are the one year estimates. Because of this, we are more certain about the percentages and distributions we will see • The 5-year data product line was designed to allow spatial granularity, but at the expense of temporal resolution.

  9. MAY 2011 Demographic Profile  -Places/Functioning Minor Civil Divisions • Age by sex  (NOT cross-tabulated by race) • Household types • Vacancy rates

  10. JUN 2011 – AUG 2011 Summary File 1 (SF 1) down to blocks • Age by sex by race • Tenure by race • Multigenerational households

MAY 2012 – DEC 2012 Summary Population and Housing Characteristics Report Series - Places • Summary file content, but processed into data tables on age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, households, families, housing tenure and occupancy, population density, and area measurements • Reports for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico; and a U.S. Summary • Similar to the Census 2000 PHC-1 report series
