You need to Dress like a Christian “in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel,” 1 Tim. 2:9 Applies to men also
“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Pet. 5:5
“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”1 Pet. 5:5
1 Pet 5:6 “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,” 1 Pet. 5: 7 “casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
I. Characteristics of Humility • Recognize our spiritual needs “blessed are the poor in spirit” Blessed are the humble God resists the proud
I. Characteristics of Humility • Will be less judgmental See our own failures “Judge not, that ye be not judged” Matt. 7:1 More sympathetic
I. Characteristics of Humility • Easier to change the wrong Pride says “my way or no way” Humility sees that we can change the wrong
I. Characteristics of Humility • It is not “voluntary humility” “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,” Col. 2:18 “false humility” NKJV “self-abasement” RSV
Humility = lowliness of mind • Voluntary humility is a false or perverted humility • Low estimate of his abilities • Act like the One Talent man • Buried his talent
The conceited person thinks of himself more highly than he ought to think. The person with false humility thinks of himself more lowly than he ought to think. Both are thinking primarily about themselves.
True humility is involuntary • Spontaneous • Not achieved by saying “I am going to be humble” • Humility Flows naturally
Oh, yeah? Well, I’ll bet I’m Twice as humble as you are !
II. What God does for the Humble • Gives grace to the humble Tit. 2:11 – to all men Humble self – obedient Proud – arrogant = reject
II. What God does for the Humble • Will exalt the humble Saul – I & II Samuel David – II Samuel God exalts the humble
III. Result of Humility • Cast our cares upon God Proud will not accept help Feeling sorry for self is not being clothed with humility Humility casts burdens upon God
III. Result of Humility • Realize God cares for us God still loves and cares Matt. 11:28-30 Gal. 6:1-2
Are You Clothed with Humility • See need for God • He gives His grace • Cast cares upon Him
Humble are Teachable “Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.” Jeremiah 18:6
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.”James 4:10 Clothed with Humility
“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Pet. 5:5
1 Pet 5:6 “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,” 1 Pet. 5: 7 “casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
