Habitat • Black widows live in more areas of North America than other poisonous spiders. • Their shelter is dark places, such as basements and caves. • Their skin is black to blend in with the dark.
Appearance • Black widows are in the class: Arachnids. • They are 1-1/2 4 cm long. • They are all black with a small red hourglass.
Food • Black widows don’t hunt for food. • They hide behind their web to wait for their food. • Then they run to the insect and eat it. • They eat when they feel vibration from their web on to their legs.
Young • The baby is called a spiderling. • Black widows can have hundreds of babies. • They hatch after about twenty days.
Enemies • The two enemies are people and mud dauber wasps. • They bite people but I don’t know if they can get away from the mud dauber wasps. • A mud dauber wasp paralyzes the spider then feeds the spider to it’s babies!
Communication and Relatives • All spiders communicate through vibration such as hearing a vibration near their web! • This spider is called the red legged widow and is a relative of black widows.
Interesting Facts • Did you know sometimes the female may eat the male because she is color blind? • They would not be a good pet because of their poisonous bite!
