What is albinism? • Albinism is a defect of melanin production that results in little or no color in the skin, hair, and eyes.

What causes Albinism? • Affects production of melanin • melanocytes are cells that produce melanin and they are present, but the genetic mutation interferes with the pigment production
Symptoms • Absence of color in hair, skin, and eyes • Patchy or missing skin color • Crossed eyed • Light sensitive • Rapid eye movement • Vision problems
Treatment • no actual treatment • Wear sunscreen • Wear sun glasses • Eye surgeries are suggested
Facts about albinism • 1 in 70 people have it • The gene for albinism is recessive, so the kid will not show signs unless it receives the recessive allele from the mom and dad • Any living organism can have it • Back in medieval times, people would often kill albinos because they were known to take part in witchcraft. • Many animals with albinism lack their protective camouflage to hide themselves from predators.
