What is it and what are the Causes Albinism happens when one of several genetic defects makes the body unable to produce or distribute melanin. Which is a natural substance that gives colour to your hair or skin and iris of the eye. Usually these defects are passed through the family. There are 2 types of albinism. Type 1 : which is caused by defects that affect production of pigment Type 2: is due to a defect in the ‘P’ gene. The difference is that people born with this type have a slight colouring in comparison to those with type 1 Another form of Albinism is called Oculocutaneous Albinism. People with this type of albinism have white or pink hair, skin and iris color as well as vision problems.
Symptoms A person with albinism has these following symptoms: • No color in their hair, iris or skin • Patchy, missing skin color There are many forms of albinism so sometimes others may have these: • Crossed eyed • Light sensitivity • Rapid eye movement • Vision problems
Treatment The treatment is dependant is how severe the disease is. The treatment involves protection of the skin and eyes. It can be done by: • Reducing sunburn risk by avoiding the sun, using sunscreen and covering up their entire body when exposed to the sun. • Sunscreen should have the highest sun protection factor • Sunglasses (UV protected) may relieve light sensitivity.
