  2. Albinism • Also know as albino. • The scientific name is Achromia. • It is the loss of color pigments in the skin and iris. • It is an autosomal recessive x linked genetic disorder. • Albinism is caused by defected 11 and 9 chromosomes.

  3. Who is affected? • Albinism occurs in all vertebrates. • Even animals have it. • It is estimated that 1 In 20,000 people in the world have it. • Each race and sex have an equal chance of having it.

  4. How can you tell? • You will be able to tell at birth. The child will be pale white. • People with albinism are very pale white and have red eyes.

  5. Symptoms • May have eye problems such as • Far or near sighted • Involuntary movement of the eyeballs • Sensitiveness to light • They may have bleeding problems • Sensitivity to the sun This is how far sighted people see

  6. Is it deadly? • Type 1 of Hermansky-Pudlock syndrome is partially deadly • Otherwise it’s only deadly in Africa where they believe in witch craft and they believe that pieces of albino people can cure sickness.

  7. Can you be tested for it? • Yes you can. There are multiple tests you can take. • An electroretinogram can be used to test for irregular brain waves. • Chemical testing provides an easy diagnosis. • There is genetic and blood tests too. • You can be diagnosed at any time in your life. • There is no treatment.

  8. Is there support groups? • One support group is the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation (NOAH). • The Albinism World Alliance (AWA) is a network of support groups around the world.

  9. Interesting facts • Albino people are more likely to get skin cancer • Many albino people are considered legally blind. • When people with albinism live in a dark skinned community they are often made fun of because they don’t fit in. • Albino people are often beaten and mistreated.
