Circulatory System Vocabulary
Parts of the Blood • 54% Plasma – the liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. It contains dissolved nutrients and waste products; such as carbon dioxide. • 45% Red Blood Cells – the solid part of the blood that absorbs (takes in) oxygen from the lungs. It also removes the carbon dioxide from cells and returns it to the lungs to remove. • 1%↓ White Blood Cells – The solid part of blood that helps the body fight infections. They attack and destroy (kill) viruses and bacteria that enter the body. • 1%↓ Platelets – Tiny pieces of blood cells inside membranes. They cause the blood to clot when a vessel is cut and also helps to repair the damaged vessel.
Matching Write the vocabulary word and the group of words that define it together.Ex – Plasma – Liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. • Plasma • Red Blood Cells • White Blood Cells • Platelets • Blood • Primary liquid in body • Helps the body fight infections • Liquid part that is mostly water • Makes the blood clot and repairs blood vessels • Absorbs oxygen and transports it
Heart Related Heart – an organ made up of muscle tissue that pumps the blood through the vessels. Heart Beat – The rhythmic sound from throbbing the heart makes as it pumps the blood through the vessels. Heart Rate – the number of times the heart beats in a minute. Pulse – the rhythmic throbbing of arteries produced by the regular contractions of the heart, especially as palpated on the wrist and neck.
Matching Write the vocabulary word and the group of words that define it together.Ex – Plasma – Liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. • Heart Rate • Heart Beat • Pulse • Heart • Organ that pumps the blood • The speed that your heart beats in a minute • The throbbing felt in your wrist or neck caused by your heart pumping • Thud –thud, the rhythm of the heart
Vessels Arteries – Blood vessels that carry the blood away from the heart. Veins– Blood vessels that return the blood to the heart. Capillaries– The smallest blood vessel that diffuses (releases, lets go) the oxygen and nutrients to cells and removes the waste from the cells. Circulatory System – transports oxygen and nutrients through out the body and removes the waste, carbon dioxide.
Matching Write the vocabulary word and the group of words that define it together.Ex – Plasma – Liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries • Smallest vessel that diffuses the oxygen to cells and removes the carbon dioxide from cells. • The vessel that carries oxygen rich blood away from the heart. • The vessel that carries blood with carbon dioxide back to the heart.
Respiratory System Vocabulary
Respiratory Respiratory System– the system in which oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood. Lungs– The main organ of the respiratory system. It is a sponge, saclike respiratory organs that function to provide oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. Oxygen– the element that we breathe that is used by the body to produce energy. Carbon Dioxide – the gas which is exhaled and a waste product formed during respiration that releases energy in the cells.
Matching Write the vocabulary word and the group of words that define it together.Ex – Plasma – Liquid part of the blood that is mostly water. • Oxygen • Carbon Dioxide • Lungs • Respiratory System • An spongy, saclike organ that takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from the blood • An element in air that our body needs to produce energy. • The body system in which oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the blood. • The gas that we exhale which is a waste product formed when energy is released.
Review Question to think about: • What is the function of the each part? • White blood cells • Red Blood Cells • Plasma • Platelets • Veins • Arteries • Capillaries • Heart • Lungs • How does the circulatory and respiratory system work together? • What are the 3 main components of every human body system?
Answers Question to think about: • What is the function of the each part? • White blood cells – fight infection • Red Blood Cells – transport oxygen and carbon dioxide • Plasma – carry blood cells and nutrients • Platelets – help the blood clot • Veins – carry blood away from the heart • Arteries – carries blood to the heart • Capillaries – diffuse the oxygen to the cells and remove the carbon dioxide from the cells • Heart – pump the blood • Lungs – take in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide • How does the circulatory and respiratory system work together? • Respiratory system brings in the oxygen and the circulatory system takes it to the cells for energy. • What are the 3 main components of every human body system? • Cells, tissues and organs
