Function • Carries oxygen, nutrients, and wastes throughout the body
Blood Vessels • Arteries carries blood from the heart to tissues of the body • Capillaries smallest of the blood vessels, walls are only 1cell thick, real work done here • Veins returns blood to the heart
Vessels Section 37-1 Vein Artery Capillary Oxygenated Blood Deoxygenated Blood
Heart • Divided into 2 sections (pumps) 1. Pulmonary circulation: right side, pumps from the heart to the lungs oxygen poor blood 2. Systematic circulation: oxygen-rich blood, Flows in left side of heart then to the body with oxygen
Valves • Found between atria and ventricles • Prevent blood from flowing back into the heart • Also pulmonary valves and one on the aorta

High Blood Pressure • Pulse: systolic= force felt in the arteries when the ventricles contract Diastolic= force felt in the arteries when the ventricles relax • AKA: Hypertension • Forces the heart to work harder, which may weaken or damage the heart muscle • Increases the risk for heart attack or stoke
Heart Attack • Arteriosclerosis=blocked arteries • Part of the heart muscle may die due to lack of oxygen • Symptoms: nausea, shortness of breath, and severe crushing chest pain • Treated with drugs to increase blood flow to the heart, saving cells
Stroke • Blood clots as a result of arteriosclerosis break free and get stuck in the vessels leading to part of the brain • Brain cells die due to lack of oxygen • Can also occur in weakened artery in the brain that bursts
