Cardiovascular System • Uses blood to carry materials to and from your cells • Cardiovascular system is made up of three parts: 1. blood 2. the heart 3. blood vessels
What is Blood? • Human body has about 5 L of blood • Definition of Blood: a connective tissue composed of plasma, blood cells, and platelets.
Plasma • Definition : the fluid part of the blood. • Plasma is made in the liver. • Mixture of water, minerals, nutrients, sugars, proteins, and other substances.
Red blood cells • Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body. • About 5,000,000 Red Blood Cells in ONE drop of blood. • Each RBC has a protein called hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin • Hemoglobin gives RBCs their red color. • Hemoglobin sticks to the oxygen you inhale which allows RBCs to carry oxygen throughout the body.
White Blood Cells • White blood cells protect the body from germs • Attack and destroy germs when they enter the body • Made in your bone marrow
Platelets • Platelets are blood cells that help stop bleeding • Found in the bone marrow
Heart • Size of your fist • Thick muscular walls • Divided into two pumps • Each pump has two chambers • Upper chamber - atrium receives blood coming in from the veins • Lower chamber - ventricle squeezes blood out into the arteries
Blood Vessels Definition: a hollow tube that carries blood. Three types of blood vessels 1. Arteries 2. Capillaries 3. Veins
Arteries • Definition: are blood vessels that direct blood away from the heart
Capillaries • Definition: smallest blood vessel in your body • Very thin • Only one cell thick
Veins • Definition: are blood vessels that direct the blood back to the heart • Receive blood from the capillaries • Valves are located inside the veins • Allow blood to move in one direction
Circulation • Travels through pulmonary arteries to lungs where it gets fresh oxygen and becomes bright red • Blood from lungs through pulmonary veins back to the heart's left side pump • Pumped out into the body
Movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again • Supplies nourishment to all of the tissue located throughout the body , except for the heart and lungs Pulmonary circulation Systemic Circulation
The heart, the lungs, and the blood vessels work together to form the circle part of the circulatory system.
Lymphatic System • Definition: a collection of organs and vessels that return fluid to the bloodstream and helps fight pathogens
Vessels of the Lymphatic System • Fluid picked up by the lymphatic system is carried through vessels. • Lymph capillaries are the smallest vessels of the lymphatic system
Lymphatic Organs • Thymus • Lymph Nodes • Spleen • Tonsils
Thymus • Releases white blood cells • Just above your heart
Lymph Nodes • Small, bean-shaped organs that are found throughout your body • As lymph travels through lymph nodes, pathogens and dead cells are removed.
Spleen • Definition: filters blood and, like the thymus releases WBCs • The largest lymph node is the spleen • Located upper left side of your abdomen • Known as the recycling point for RBCs
Tonsils • Definition: groups of lymphatic tissue • Location: at the back of your nasal cavity, on the inside of your throat
How does the lymphatic system interact with the cardiovascular system?
Cardiovascular system circulates fluid throughout the body • Some of the fluid leaks out of the vessels • The lymphatic system collects excess fluid surrounding cells and returns it to the cardiovascular system.
