Beowulf- Introduction • Europe enters chaotic period of political unrest and economic and cultural decline. • The tribes, Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, settled on the island of Britain. • Angles, Saxons, and Jutes = Anglo-Saxon Civilization • Beowulf takes place in Europe between the Danes (Denmark) and Geats (Sweden).
Beowulf-Introduction • We do not know the author. • Beowulf is a great warrior who crosses the sea to aid the Danes (Denmark) and later returns to Sweden to succeed his uncle Hygelac’s throne. • The people in the story are not Christian yet.
Beowulf- Introduction • What did these people do for fun? • They would gather in huge mead halls, large wooden buildings, where they feasted, drank mead (alcohol), and told stories. • The stories were told by scops, and the stories were told as epic poetry.
