Daily Five • Grades K-2 • A series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups 1. You read to yourself 2. You read to/with someone else 3. You listen to reading 4. You write 5. You do word work
Balanced Literacy Model • Grades 3-5 • Shared Reading • Teacher sets purpose for reading and builds students’ background knowledge • Students are exposed to higher-level vocabulary and text through mini lessons • Guided Reading • Students receive small group instruction determined by their literacy needs • Tier II interventions are supported by “push in” services provided by Title 1, Reading, or ESOL teachers
Balanced Literacy Model • Word Study • Incorporates the research-based model, Words Their Way • Students learn spelling features based on their readiness • Writing • Instruction based on the Writer’s Workshop model • Staff-wide training in the Event Frame (a pre-write template)

SOLs • Any student who earns a 600 on an SOL receives a medal and his/her name on a school banner • Students with disabilities who take alternative assessments are also included • Pre-testing pep rally led my members of the LC Bird sports team, marching band, and cheerleaders for Grades 3-5 will be held this spring to motivate students for testing
Attendance Incentives • Monthly class postersdisplayed outside the classroom • School-wide competition in which classes receive a sticker only if all students are present and ready to learn when the day begins • Peer pressure is a motivating factor • Classrooms with perfect attendance are announced daily over the intercom • Students in attendance are thanked for coming • The classroom with the most stickers receives a special treat
The Mind~Body Connection • Recess Coaching • Program designed by SportsBackers to train teachers on how to make recess more meaningful and organized • Students would have more direction on how to spend quality time outside • SHIP (School Health Initiative Program) • Program designed to correlate fitness and movement activities with SOL standards Grades K-5 • First Annual 5K • 5K and Fun Run to promote a healthy lifestyle and give back to the community (LIVESTRONG at the YMCA)
Same Gender Classrooms • Pending approval: we plan to implement same gender classrooms in 5th grade • To enable teachers to use gender specific classroom strategies • Data supports positive outcomes in areas of achievement (grades and test scores), conduct, and breadth of educational opportunities • We hope to provide this opportunity for more students in the future
