How you can help at home • When reading unfamiliar words, encourage children to use their ‘phonic knowledge’. • Never cover illustrations as they support your child in working out the context and meaning of the word. • Always say the first sounds loudly and then get quieter. • Always make reading time special, quiet and enjoyable.
What about the ‘Tricky Words’? • The ‘Tricky Words’ are also known as ‘Irregular’ words and no matter how hard you try you cannot sound them out i.e. the was come to do • The first Tricky Words your child has to learn are: to the no go I “ You can’t sound them out, you’ve just got to know them”
Outline of what’s happening next. • Time for you to go into Reception class to spend time with your children. • You will see a range of differentiated phonics activities that your child accesses on a weekly basis. Have fun!
