Introduction • This presentation is an example of an educational game for a mobile device, such as an iPad • This game will focus on self-initiated e-Learning, but students will be encouraged to work with others • This mobile educational application will be called "Cook & Learn" • Note: All images in this presentation are from the Google search for "Free Clip Art"
Cook & Learn: Goals The goals of the Cook & Learn mobile educational application: • Improve English • Focus on vocabulary • Focus on correct sentence use • Improve math skills • Focus on addition • Focus on using fractions • Cook a delicious meal • Learning can be fun • Learning with friends and family
Cook & Learn: Example This video of a cooking game is similar to the Cook & Learn application. Students will work by themselves, with other students, or with their parents.
Cook & Learn: Another Example This video is another example of a mobile educational game. The Cook & Learn iPad application will be similar. Students will interact with the application using the touch screen.
Cook & Learn: First Steps • Teachers will help students load the game onto their mobile device • Teachers will show students basic navigational skills. For example: • Touch the Home button to return to the main screen • Touch the Repeat button to repeat a lesson • Touch the Save button to save their work • Touch the Help button to receive additional information Home Repeat Save Help
Cook & Learn: Home The Cook & Learn Home screen will feature three options. • Begin: Students will touch Begin to start a lesson. • Review: Repeat a lesson. • Quit: Stop the application.
Cook & Learn: Begin There will be two options on the Begin screen: • Easy: This features only ingredients. For example, students will see "tomatoes." • Difficult: This features the exact amount of ingredients. For example, students will see "One-half cup of chocolate chips." Easy Difficult
Cook & Learn: Easy The Easy level will contain a recipe for a salad.
Easy: Salad A salad is a delicious and healthy meal. It is made of lettuce and vegetables. Sometimes there is chicken, fish, steak, or eggs in a salad.
Easy: Vocabulary • Recipe is a set of instructions for preparing a dish • Ingredient is a food or a part of a recipe
Easy: Salad Ingredients • Lettuce • Tomatoes • Onions • Dressing
Easy: Quiz Students will answer the question: What ingredients are in a salad? • Answer: Lettuce Tomatoes Onions Dressing
Easy: Salad Recipe . • Students will follow the steps to make a salad. • On each screen, there will be a Next and Back button. Students can press these buttons to move forward or backward
Easy: Quiz There will be a vocabulary quiz. Students will answer questions such as: "What vegetables are in a salad? or "What do you do when you toss a salad?"
Cook & Learn: Difficult Students will click on "Difficult" to begin the lesson on cooking chocolate chip cookies.
Cook & Learn: Difficult Students will click on "Video" to watch a cooking video. Sample video: How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies
Difficult: Chocolate Chip Cookies A chocolate chip cookie is a great dessert. Cookies are round, sweet, and delicious.
Difficult: Vocabulary • Recipe is a set of instructions for preparing a dish • Ingredient is a food or a part of a recipe
Difficult: Reminder Students must work with a teacher or parent. This recipe will be more difficult. It will require the oven.
Difficult: Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe Students will follow the steps to make chocolate chip cookies. On each screen, there will be a Next and Back button. Students can press these buttons to move forward or backward. Next Back
Difficult: Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe The step-by-step recipe is from foodnetwork.com: 1. Evenly position 2 racks in the middle of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. Put the butter in a microwave safe bowl, cover and microwave on medium power until melted.
3. Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt in another bowl. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a wooden spoon; take care not to over mix. Stir in the chocolate chips or chunks.
4. Scoop heaping tablespoons of the dough onto the prepared pans. Wet hands slightly and roll the dough into balls. Space the cookies about 2-inches apart on the pans.
5. Bake, until golden, but still soft in the center, 12 to 16 minutes, depending on how chewy or crunchy you like your cookies. Transfer hot cookies with a spatula to a rack to cool. Serve.
Difficult: Quiz This quiz will be math-based. For example, students will answer questions such as: "The recipe for chocolate chip cookies contains 1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter. How many sticks of butter are in 1 cup?" Answer: 1/2 cup + 1/2 cup = 1 cup
Cook & Learn: Final Steps • Teachers will review English and math lessons with students. • Teachers will download students' results from tests on the applications. • Students will repeat lessons if necessary.
