CEOS Precipitation ConstellationJAXA Status Masayuki Ohta JAXA Earth Observation Research Center September 23, 2008 WGISS-26 in Boulder
CEOS precipitation constellation activity • Jointly led by NASA & JAXA, with participation of various organizations. • The 2nd CEOS PC workshop • Held in Japan, June 5-6 • Established 2008 Work Plan • Finalized Implementation Plan • GPM envisioned to be a realization of the CEOS PC.
JAXA GPM status • GPM/Core DPR development status • DPR development schedule is base on July 2013 launch. • Preliminary Design Review (PDR) • DPR system PDR : Held in Dec.-Jan. 2008 • JAXA final PDR : Held in Jan.-Feb.2008 • Delta PDR for some components which design changed after system PDR : Jun. 2008 • Critical Design Review (CDR) • Components CDR : Dec.2008 • Science Application • GSMaP(Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation) has been already released using multi-satellite data.
Global Rainfall Map in NRT • Started November 14, 2007. • hourly global rainfall maps in near real time (about four hours after observation) is available. • Data: • TRMM TMI, • Aqua AMSR-E, • DMSP SSM/I and • GEO IR • Other Contents: • Latest 10 hr Browse images • 24hr animation • KMZ files (Google Earth) http://sharaku.eorc.jaxa.jp/GSMaP/index.htm
GSMaP on Google Earth • GSMaP is hourly rainfall map. • 4 hours after observation; • 3 hours : data collection • 1 hour : data processing • The more available efficient data is, the better data accuracy is.
Prospect for merged product • The more available efficient data is, the better data accuracy is. • “Efficient” means • Precipitation data increase • Quick collection/access data • Easy to use etc. • Gathering meaningful data of PC • Hope CEOS to contact China and Russia (Roshydromet). • To understand each organization’s methods • Data exchange policy • Data accessibility • Data and product format, contents, meta data for handling multi-satellite data • etc.
About GDaWG (GPM Data Working Group) • Porpose • Concentrate the expertise of potential GPM data and data systems experts • Discuss potential partner approaches, concerns, tools and schedules • Coordinate, as possible, data formats and metadata items • Identify major issues, concerns and action items pertaining to data and data system for GPM partnership • Coordinate schedules, needs and reviews as required • Get to know personnel involved with data and data systems at various partner organizations and begin the establishment of personal interactions • Provide technical study and guidance under the auspices of the Joint Precipitation Science Team and the GPM governing body, when established
GDaWG status • GDaWG • Meetings: • The 1st GDaWG meeting was held in College Park Maryland on Feb 19-20, 2003 • The 2nd GDaWG meeting was held in Tokyo in February 2004 • The GDaWG session was held in the 7th GPM International Workshop in December, 2007. • Opportunity for the 3rd GDaWG meeting • The 8th GPM International Planning Workshop • Place: Paris • Date: May-June 2009
GDaWG status • Website: • Prepared the GDaWG website to promote personal connection and to share the useful information for data working group activities. http://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/GPM/DataWG/gdawg/index.html • Developed the GDaWG operating procedures (GOP) for GDaWG website • Charter • To clarify the definition and our role. • Non-governance • Framework • Relationship with CEOS-PC
Request to WGISS from CEOS/PC • We would like to have recommendations/suggestions for technical issues for data sharing, data exchange format, algorithm codes, tools, file naming, logical formats, and others. • If WGISS already have discussed and list-uped issues, we want the list and general rules or approach methods for each issues of its list.
