  1. Comparing and Ordering Decimals 6.3.1.1 Locate positive rational numbers on a number line and plot pairs of positive rational numbers on a coordinate plane. 6.3.1.2 Compare positive rational numbers represented in various forms. Use the symbols <, >, and =.

  2. Ican… • Locate numbers on a number line • Compare and order decimals Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

  3. 2 Methods Use a Number Line Line Up and Cross Off

  4. Using a Number Line Picture a Metric Ruler or a Number Line to help you locate decimal numbers • Numbers further to the right are larger Numbers lines help us to compare decimals!

  5. Let’s Try Using A Number Line Half pipe Results 42.0 42.1 42.5 Since 42.5 is to the right of 42.1 we have: 42.5 > 42.1

  6. Line Up and Cross Off • First and foremost… You need to place numbers on top of one another making sure to line up the decimal point… • When comparing decimals, you have to look at the whole numbers. • If the whole numbers are the same, then look at the decimal in the tenths place. • Keep looking at the digits until you can identify which is the greatest or least.

  7. Order from LEAST to GREATEST15, 14.95, 15.8, 15.01 Let’s Try… • First, line up the decimal points 15 14.95 15.8 15.01

  8. Order from LEAST to GREATEST15, 14.95, 15.8, 15.01 • Next, use ghost zeros so that each number has the same number of decimal places 15.00 14.95 15.80 15.01

  9. Order from LEAST to GREATEST15, 14.95, 15.8, 15.01 • Finally, use place value to compare the decimals. Always start from the left!! 15.00 14.95 15.80 15.01

  10. Order from LEAST to GREATEST15, 14.95, 15.8, 15.01 • Finally, use place value to compare the decimals. Always start from the left!! 15.00 14.95 15.80 15.01 1st
