Cáceres Capital City • The Maltravieso Caves can be found right outside of what is now known as Cáceres • The caves were inhabited during the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods in history • The inhabitants left strange wall paintings, and later artifacts such as pottery and tools
Paleolithic Painters • Numerous paintings of hands have been found in the caves • Of 12 clear outlines, only one has all of the fingers and joints intact • These paintings were probably made by blowing paint through a reed (see picture)
Visiting the Caves • The caves are closed to the public to protect the delicate paintings and prehistoric weapons and tools inside • Visitors can walk outside the caves, or visit a realistic reproduction which has been built right next door
Touring Cáceres • There are 4 sections of Cáceres, the historic quarter, the city centre, “La Judería” (the Jewish quarter), and the outlying areas • Some remarkable places to visit: Iglesia de Santa María, Veletas Palace (which features Arabic art), Arco de la Estrella, Palacio de la Isla, and Plaza San Juan
